Shabby Chic Decorating
By Kathy Bonds
Shabby Chic is a time worn style created by the wonderful designer Rachel Ashwell. Rachel says it is a style of living that reflects the grace and simplicity of another tim. Now I certainly agree with her. I believe the Shabby Chic style is very warm, inviting, and quite a romantic style, and it is defiantly here to stay. It also has a very vintage look, and that is always a popular style of decorating. And it is just so much fun seeking out lovely vintage pieces. Rachel's guideline words are simple. Comfort, function and beauty! The thrill of the hunt begins at thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales and more. And MANY times you can find absolutely fabulous pieces in someone's trash bin. Just clean it up and there ya go --- simply amazing. So with that said let the treasure hunt begin.
Warmer weather always brings the garage sales out in full bloom. Many times you can get lucky and find several on one block. Don't be disappointed if you don't find what you're looking for right away. Sometimes it takes a little time to find that oh so special piece that you are seeking. And there it is, right before your eyes that magnificent old floral painting that would look just absolutely elegant on the wall behind your grandmother's antique rocking chair. Ah, absolute perfection. It just does not get much better. So as I am sure you have guessed, vintage floral are very Shabby Chic. The possibilities are simply endless. You can find floral bedspreads, pillows, material to make you own pillows, floral handbags. Like I said, the possibilities are endless.
Another look that I love is the tableware. Nothing has to match and I can surly go with that look. And if something is a little chipped, well that's okay too. But I wouldn't suggest using a chipped drinking glass. You can set your dinner table with your old china mixed with some nice milk glass pieces. Now how about adding some wine glasses that DON'T match into the mix! And above all use a lovely old white vintage tablecloth. Ah, now that looks elegant.
